Selective writing

I have gone through a couple of newspapers both English and Oriya. Oriya news papers faintly report about the killing of Hindus. It says some people set fire in a village where residents are predominantly Hindus and they bolted doors of some houses while doing so. However English newspapers are mum on the same.

Why are the newspapers keeping mum in the issue? The answer I can think of is it does not suit their propaganda. They can sell idea like communal fanatic Hindus organizations are torturing the minorities. We are the watchdogs. The idea does not sell to say Hindus are attacked by minorities in a state where BJP is in power. So local papers reported the news half heartedly and English media, the so called (pseudo)secularist media, ignored it.

To put it in Gujarat Chief Minister Modi's word they have a different standard for a foreign missionary (Graham stone) and for the local Indians (the residents of Brahmini village). The former is a national shame where as the later is not news at all.

Value of life of Hindu

Orissa is in news. Mostly the corporate run english papers don't write anything about Orissa. It either covers poverty ridden deaths of oriya people or how Christians are torchered in Orissa. I can not think of any good news published about Orissa. If anybody follows the India media he would think Orissa is a place for fanatic Hindus. Let me ask some simple questions to my media friends.

1) Do they know how the incident started?
2) What is their take on lakshmananda Saraswati?
3) Do the know the number of people died because of the riots?
4) What would have been their reaction in case 40 Christians were died in stead of 40 Hindus?

Report:
In Orissa 40 Hindus who are burn alive.

The communal violence took forty innocent lives in Brahmani village, on Wednesday. The unmoving action of the ranked Police official caused the blood shed in Brahmani village. During the visit of the chief Minister Naveen Pattnaik, the curfew was violated for a few moments. The relaxation in the curfew due to the visit on Chief Minister provided a chance to the Christian community. After the visit of Naveen Pattnaik, utilizing the chance fully, the Christian community hooked the doors of the Hindu houses from outside and blazed it. As per information, 12 people died unsophisticatedly in the burning houses. To disclose the violent situation of Kandhmal from the outer world, the cell phones of the Police personals were seized. According to the sources, Mohana tahasildar , Bedabara Pradhan, who was provided with the magistrate power, with drew the curfew from the locality, viewing the Chief Minister's Brahmani village visit.

Can media confirm or deny the report??

It brings back the old question what is the value of a Hindu life in Hindustan?

Odisa my state

I am from orissa. I have talked with people from other states. While discussing with them, these are the two important topics that are discussed several times.

1) Orissa is rich in ore mines and have adequete rain fall. Why Orissa is one of the poorest state in India?

2) Oriya people are poor state still it does not have naxalite problem like its neighbors. Orissa has 37% public in SC and ST, still it does not have caste based hatred like other states.

Discussion to follow.

Think Like Google:3

Google not only does things differently, it does different things to stay ahead of others. Google has done a set of products that are unique and puts Google ahead of its entire competitor. Some of the unique products are

Google Map: Need to know any place its location; look at Google map. In western countries map is essential to go to any place and Google has done good job in providing maps. In Toronto most of the rental sites provide Google map along with their ad. It is not only gives the map but also clear picture with Zooming. I like AJAX powered Google map which is fast clear and user friendly.

Google Book Search: Search is probable Google’s core strength. It provides Book search (so does Blog search). If I am looking for something I can figure out what are the books I should look at.

Google Code: Google is not only developing wonderful products but also it allows others to use its code API to develop faster. The details of Google code are available at http://code.google.com/. Google APIs are powerful easy to develop.

iGoogle: When at client's place I use client's webpage at my home page and when at home Google is my home page. There are many other people who use Google as their home page. Google powered by iGoogle makes page more interesting. You can add your favorite web pages to Google page.

Docs & Spreadsheets: Want to store your documents online? Google document allows storing and editing document. It allows uploading word documents in open office, RTF, HTML and downloading to your desktop as Word PDF and others.

Google Translate: In my last trip to Zurich, I used to get every letter in German. I and all my friends don't have any knowledge about German. So we have the choice to keep guessing, ask some local people or use Google translator. And most of us opted third option.

Think Like Google:2

Google does things differently. It is famous for its innovation. The complete list of Google product is available at http://www.google.com/intl/en/options/

Some of the products redefined the products and brought revolution. Some of them are

1) Google Search Engine: When anybody talks about Google, we understand it as the Google search Engine. Google is not the first to provide search Engine. Yahoo and MSN has search Engine prior to Google. Google redefined search criteria and now most people use Google as search Engine and I use Google as a synonym of search Engine.

2) Gmail: Two years ago, I did not have a personal hard disk. So I need to keep my important documents in the internet. I need to delete my mails regularly to keep the mail box limit in size. I have multiple mail accounts in order to keep all my documents. Gmail redefined the web mail and provided 1 GB for mail where as others were offering around five MB mail box. Others followed the suite. On the top of it Gmail is free from the flashy ads, it is more readable. It is based on AJAX and faster than other mails. Gmail does not provide some of the features provided by rivals. However it is responsible for the revolution and better user experience for web mail.

3) Orkut: I have lost contacts with most of college friends after I completed my engineering. I have contacted more friends in last year than past 9 years. The credit goes to orkut. Orkut affiliated by Google is the largest social networking site. Communities and scraping is common among people. Adding photo and videos makes it more powerful. What I like most about Orkut is centralized place where I can update my details and friends can get it by looking at my profile. No need to inform anybody about it.

4) Google Toolbar: Bookmark is essential for people who surf frequently. I prefer my bookmark to be at my machine and at internet, so that I can download at another computer and use it at new place. Google Toolbar provides the functionality (other compotators such as yahoo tool bar provides the same functionality.) It gives other functionality such as spell check smart search, add buttons and share your web. It also provides features such pop up blocker.

5) YouTube: You Tube changed the concept of video sharing in globe. Now we can share it and access anywhere. It is not a product developed by Google, however it enhanced the capabilities of products by Google.

To be contd..

Think Like Google:1

In the last week I have read three interesting news regarding google, which enforced my thought that google is doing something unique and thinking in google way is different than others. The news are

1) Google is the best brand ahead of GE, Walmart and Microsoft.
2) Google is the first choice for students in American B-Schools.
3) Ther is a grape vine that Microsoft will buy Yahoo Inc. to compete with Google.

All the news shows Google in a positive light. Google is leading the world because of its innovations. It is doing things differently and doing different things. It has wonderful sets of products such as google search, gmail, google earth, orkut, yutubes etc.

Copy paste and Bookmark

I am into Information technology. We copy and paste code lot of times from what is available freely. Once I was talking to a friend who was denouncing software proffessionals for copy pasting. Is copy pasting easy? Answer is yes, if you know what to copy and how to find it and where to paste it. It takes nothing to copy and paste it and a genious to find what to copy and where to paste and a smart proactive person to find what to copy in stipulated amount of time.

I rely on copy pasting instead of memorising everything. It saves time and enrgy and makes sure that there is no syntax error. I do customize the code. I book mark the sites which I use extensively for copying the code.

It is painful when I loose my bookmark, I have to start everything from the scratch. Google has gone one step beyond and now we can book mark using google bar. Wherever I go my bookmark follows me:)

Open Source

We need some sponsers who will support the open source products and project. It is important to get support when needed. IWhy will anybody support open source projects? If you are asking the same question as me, then ask JBoss. Apache supports lots of open source projects. Sun Microsystems has joined open source arena. IBM supports linux and open source. Go to sourceforge.net, you will find lots of corporate who support the hosting of open source. The reason being??

I am a techy guy who has little knowledge on finance. I believe it is because of demand and supply. When developers and Business wants open source products and greater control corporates try to provide the same.

Open Source

Third kind of stake holders are developers who work on open source project.
Why will someone make his source code open? It is simple. When certain features are not available at products one creates its own open source project and which has been taken by a community. Let us look at the following case studies

1) Let us take the example of ant tool in java. There are no unique build utility in java such as make function in C or Cpp. James Duncan Davidson tried building some utility which will build and do something simillar to make. And donated it to the apache community. And today ant works in a more clearer way than make and easy to use. many of the commercial build tools are based on ant.

2) I met Proffesor Gustavo Alonso in ETH. He was working or certain projects with his students. After completion of the project, they either sell it to any vendor or make it open source.

3)
There are no tools as of today which supports SOA Transaction. Benjamin Liberman developed a Transaction Cordinator Service which is available as open source to start the work.

Some of the projects give production quality code where as some others need further work to deploy it at production.

Open Source?

There are two kinds of stakeholders for open source users
1) Developers who use it
2) Coprorotes who use it

Open source is developers paradise as they can see the source code and it gives them more control over the software. Most of the open source products are free. So it costs them nothing. So a developer will prefer to use open source software.

ROI (Return on Investment) is key behind any decision made by corporates. Any product which gives better ROI will be choosen against another product by Corporates. Cost includes licence fees, training the staff, down time, support etc. Earlier open source products were costing higher as getting the staff, training them and getting required support of open source products are much higher than licence fees of others. However nowadays the trend is changing. One gets supports from the open source product. There are community for the open source softwares and open source products are not always free. So open source provides almost same support and provides the product as open source.

Open Source?

As an IT proffessional I look closely at the open source products. Recently the usage of open source product has gone up. There are open source products range from simple build tool to complex BPM products. Big corporates promote usage of open source products and corporates like IBM, Oracle etc. support the open source platform. So the trend is to use more open source products. Who are the stakeholders and why is there more open source products today?
